CIRES Profile

Can you summarize your research in a simple way?

Cloud doctor.

How long have you conducted fieldwork?

26 years of fieldwork.

Where have you conducted fieldwork? Which was your favorite?

  • Arctic ocean / sea ice (multiple times)
  • Greenland Ice Sheet
  • Arctic land stations in Alaska and Canada
  • Colorado mountains
  • Florida, Massachusetts

Favorite is a very hard question because each has its spectacular highlights. Central Arctic Ocean might be my favorite just because of the extreme distance from civilization.

What is your favorite part about conducting fieldwork?

I particularly enjoy working together with others to solve the many problems that naturally arise when trying to conduct fieldwork.  It seems that there is almost always some solution, but it takes creativity, persistence, and teamwork.
