About the ADVANCEing FieldSafety Toolkit

An important complement to trainings around field safety and harassment before deploying into the field is the presence and implementation of well-communicated, clear guidelines and community norms through a code of conduct (McCabe et al., 1996; Nelson et al., 2017) as well as its enforcement and accessible incident reporting mechanisms during field trainings or field campaigns.

Building on the best practices (e.g., Kelly & Yarincik 2022) and existing online resources curated by ADVANCEGeo on their website, an ADVANCEing FieldSafety Toolkit will be developed to include checklists, examples, fillable documents, and implementation guides that field teams can use to set codes of conduct, codes of ethics, surveys, reporting instruments, and structures to facilitate quick response in the field for different field contexts (e.g., undergraduate field campaign, ship-based research, tent-based field research). Each course module will have its unique Toolkit that will contain module-specific resources, such as the one mentioned above, and additional readings.
