Can you summarize your research in a simple way?
In the field I help collect long term ‘glacier health’ (mass balance) measurements for glaciers in the North Cascades (NW United States). In the office I spend a lot of time on Zoom learning what the needs of Arctic and Antarctic scientists are and working to build solutions to address those needs.
How long have you conducted fieldwork?
10+ years.
Where have you conducted fieldwork? Which was your favorite?
Iceland, Portugal, Norway, Alaska, Washington and Maine in the United States.
What is your favorite part about conducting fieldwork?
Spending time outside in incredible natural environments and working as a team to collect data that records the state of ice in a snapshot of time. I find that navigating data collection with other people, specifically when it’s rainy and cold outside, is a challenge that necessitates people coming together to work as a united team. And that feeling when the data collection is done and you’re able to fully soak in the place that you’re in and how incredible it is whilst wearing a fresh pair of dry socks - that feeling is pure magic.
