The University of Kansas Profile

Can you summarize your research in a simple way?

I study how tools from geology and geophysics can help support archaeologists and law enforcement investigations.

How long have you conducted fieldwork?

16 years.

Where have you conducted fieldwork? Which was your favorite?

The majority of my fieldwork has spanned across the midwest United States (Ohio, North Dakota, Kansas, Texas, Minnesota) but I’ve also done fieldwork in Virginia and Ireland. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I’d have to say Ireland because that’s where I learned how to do fieldwork in a supportive and collaborative environment.

What is your favorite part about conducting fieldwork?

Being outside and connecting with nature. I feel incredibly lucky that I get to have time outside of the office and meeting people from all over the world. I moved around every year or two as a kid because my dad was in the Air Force. Fieldwork brings me back to that excitement and challenge of trying new things when you show up at a brand new place.
